Guard Tour and Patrol Control Systems
Offline and online tour systems that record security guards' patrols checkpoint by checkpoint. A turnkey service including site survey, installation, software and technical service.
What Is a Guard Tour System?
Guard tour systems are supervision solutions that record security guards' patrols and report whether planned tours were actually carried out. In the industry they are also known as a guard tour control system, security tour control system, patrol tracking system or watchman tour system. The mechanical watchman clock and paper checklists used in the past have today been replaced by electronic tour wands and software.
On a large site, security depends not only on the number of guards but on patrols being carried out regularly and completely. A tour system creates an indisputable record for both the guard and the manager.
How Does a Guard Tour Control System Work?
- Checkpoint tags are placed at the checkpoints along the patrol route.
- The software defines which checkpoints are to be scanned, in what order and within which time windows.
- During the patrol, the guard scans the checkpoints with a guard tour wand; each scan is recorded with a timestamp.
- Data is transferred to the software when the device is placed in its docking station or, on online models, in real time.
- The software compares the plan with what actually happened and reports missed, late or out-of-sequence checkpoints.
Types of Guard Tour Systems
Offline tour wand
Metal-bodied devices resistant to impact and water. They require no internet or data line; data is transferred at the end of the shift. A simple and durable solution for single-site facilities.
Online (GSM / GPS-enabled) systems
Each scan is sent to the control center instantly; depending on the model, location information is also reported. An instant alert can be received for a missed checkpoint. Suitable for multi-site security companies and critical facilities.
Mobile app-based solutions
Apps that work with suitable phones and tags. They offer flexibility such as adding photos and notes; however, issues such as phone battery life, durability and the guard's personal use should be considered.
Systems with incident logging
The guard records situations observed during the patrol (open door, malfunction, damage, suspicious situation) with incident tags, so the report also reflects the condition of the site.
Guard Tour System Types Compared
| Feature | Offline tour wand | Online (GSM/GPS) | Mobile app |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data transfer | When the device is placed in its docking station | Real time | Real time (if internet is available) |
| Durability | High, impact- and water-resistant housing | High, depending on the model | Depends on the phone used |
| Infrastructure needed | None | Mobile data line | Phone and mobile data |
| Instant alerts | No | Yes | Yes |
| Best suited for | Single site, daily reporting | Multiple sites, critical facilities | Flexible tasks requiring photos and notes |
Benefits of a Guard Tour System
- Transparent supervision: Whether a patrol was carried out is based on records, not opinion; disputes between guards and management decrease.
- Guard motivation: The effort of guards who patrol regularly becomes visible in the reports.
- Rapid response: With online systems, a missed checkpoint is noticed immediately.
- Client reporting: Security companies can document their service quality to clients.
- Incident review: After damage or theft, you can look back and see which checkpoints were visited at those hours.
How to Create a Tour Plan
For an effective tour plan, risk points are prioritized first: outer doors, loading docks, power rooms and out-of-sight corners. The route is designed so that the guard can reach all critical points in a logical order. A reasonable duration for each tour and a tolerance between checkpoints are set; tolerances that are too tight create unnecessary alarms, while tolerances that are too loose leave gaps in supervision. Different plans can be defined for night and day shifts. Changing the route order periodically makes patrols harder to predict from outside.
Where Are They Used?
Guard tour systems are used by factories, organized industrial zones, warehouses, logistics centers, residential complexes and residences, hospitals, schools and campuses, shopping malls, construction sites, energy facilities and private security companies. Large areas left unattended at night benefit the most from the system. Security companies serving multiple clients monitor the patrol performance of all sites from a single software, reducing both supervision and reporting workload.
How to Choose a Guard Tour System
- Length of the patrol route and number of checkpoints
- Need for instant alerts, or whether a daily report is sufficient
- Environmental conditions: outdoors, rain, dust, cold
- Number of guards, shifts and sites
- Client-based reporting for security companies
- Ease of use of the software and report formats
What Determines the Price?
- Device type and quantity
- Number of checkpoint and incident tags
- Software license, number of users and sites
- Data line and infrastructure costs for online systems
- Scope of installation, training and support
Installation Process
During the free site survey in Istanbul, we walk the route together and identify the critical points. Tags are mounted, the software is installed, tour plans are defined and guards and managers are trained. Reports from the first weeks are reviewed together and tolerance times are adjusted to the site. Devices are shipped to all 81 provinces of Turkey, and installation is planned per project.
Maintenance and Tips
Regular charging and data transfer of devices, physical checks of tags and occasionally changing the tour order increase the system's effectiveness. Reviewing patrol records together with footage from camera systems makes incident review easier. Frequently asked questions about guard tour systems
How many checkpoints can be defined?
In practice, there is no limit. Tags are wireless and durable, and can easily be mounted wherever needed.
Is real-time tracking possible?
On online models, each scan is sent to the control center instantly; on offline models, data is transferred when the device is placed in its docking station.
Can security companies get multi-client reports?
Yes. Different sites and clients can be reported separately in the software.
What is a guard tour wand?
A guard tour wand is a hand-held device that a security guard uses to scan the tags at checkpoints during a patrol. It stores each scan with its date and time, and the data is transferred to the software later or in real time.
