Barrier systems are automation solutions that control vehicle entrances and exits, prevent unauthorized vehicles from entering a facility and regulate traffic. Used in residential complexes, shopping malls, hospitals, factories, logistics warehouses, business centers and public buildings, vehicle barrier systems range from a simple boom barrier to automatic access with license plate recognition and impact-resistant rising bollards. The right choice depends on the required security level, traffic volume and user profile.
How Do Automatic Barrier Systems Work?
All automatic barrier systems work on the same principle: a control unit runs the motor on a command from an authorization source (remote control, card, license plate recognition camera, operator button); the barrier opens, the vehicle passes and, based on information from the sensors, the barrier closes again. The difference lies in the type of obstacle: a boom, a rising post, a sliding gate or a plate rising from the ground.
Types of Barriers
Parking boom barrier
The most common solution. It regulates traffic, deters unauthorized entry and is relatively quick to install. Details: parking barrier system.
Barrier with license plate recognition
With a camera and software added to a boom barrier or gate, registered vehicles pass without a remote control and every movement is recorded with a photo. See license plate recognition system.
Rising bollards and road blockers
High-security barriers that rise from the ground and physically stop forced entry. See rising bollards.
Automatic sliding gate
A solution that fully closes the entrance and also provides perimeter security; in residential complexes and factories it can be used together with a boom barrier. See automatic gate motors.
Barrier Types Compared
| Type | Security level | Installation and infrastructure | Best suited for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boom barrier | Low – medium (deterrent) | Relatively easy, base and cabling | Car parks of residential complexes, malls, hospitals and business centers |
| Barrier with plate recognition | Medium, strong record-keeping | Additional camera, pole and software | Entrances with many resident or staff vehicles |
| Rising bollard / road blocker | High (physical stopping) | Requires excavation, concrete foundation, drainage | Public buildings, critical facilities, pedestrian zones |
| Automatic sliding gate | Medium – high (full closure) | Track, base, motor and gear rack | Entrances of residential complexes, villas, factories and warehouses |
Accessories
- Photocell: Stops the movement when a vehicle or person is detected in the closing path.
- Loop detector: Detects the vehicle with a wire loop embedded in the ground; prevents the boom from lowering or the bollard from rising while the vehicle is above it, and enables automatic closing after passage.
- Remote control: For opening remotely; encrypted models are recommended to prevent copying.
- Battery: Keeps the barrier running for a while during a power outage.
- Flashing light, traffic light and LED boom: For visibility and queue management.
- Speed bump: speed bumps can be used to reduce vehicle speed in the entry lane.
Manual Opening During a Power Outage
On boom barriers without a battery set, the boom stays where it is when the power goes out. The lock on the housing is opened with a special key, the motor is released and the boom is raised by hand; when power returns, the lock is engaged again. Depending on the model, rising bollards and gate motors also have a manual lowering or release mechanism. It is important that these steps are demonstrated to security staff during installation and that the key is kept in an accessible place.
Recommendations by Application Area
In residential complexes, the most practical combination is a boom barrier with license plate recognition for residents' vehicles and control from the security booth for visitors. For shopping mall and hospital car parks, fast-opening barriers built for heavy traffic and separate entry and exit lanes are recommended. In factories and logistics warehouses, heavy vehicle traffic calls for long booms, support posts and barriers used together with sliding gates. In public buildings and critical facilities, a boom barrier handles daily traffic while rising bollards or road blockers serve as a second line of security. In indoor car parks, the need for a folding boom must always be measured because of ceiling height.
How to Choose a Barrier System
- Is the goal deterrence or physical stopping?
- Daily number of passages and vehicle flow at peak hours
- Are users regular (residents, staff) or changing (visitors, customers)?
- Entrance width, ceiling height and ground conditions
- Need for integration with cards, time attendance (PDKS) or license plate recognition
- Frequency of power outages and need for a battery
What Determines Barrier System Prices?
- Barrier type, boom length or number of bollards
- Motor class and endurance for the level of use
- Accessories: photocell, loop detector, battery, flashing light
- Control method: remote control, card, license plate recognition
- Construction work such as excavation, concrete, trenching and cabling
- Number of lanes and entry/exit layout
For this reason, barrier prices are not set from a product list but finalized per project after the site survey.
How Is a Barrier Installed?
- During the site survey, the lane layout, ground, electrical and network infrastructure are examined.
- The base or foundation is prepared; cable conduits and, if necessary, loop channels are cut.
- The barrier housing is fixed, and the boom or bollards are mounted.
- Accessories and control systems are connected.
- Safety functions and manual opening are tested, and user training is provided.
Maintenance
Spring adjustment, photocell alignment, battery condition, hydraulic oil level and drainage checks are the main items of periodic maintenance. Regular maintenance prevents the entrance from locking up at an unexpected moment.

Frequently asked questions about barrier and automation systems
What happens when the power goes out?
If there is a battery set, the barrier keeps working for a while; if not, it is unlocked with the key and the boom is raised by hand.
Which boom length should I choose?
The clear entrance width is measured and the boom is chosen accordingly. For booms longer than 4 meters, a support post at the boom tip is recommended.
Can the boom hit a vehicle?
When the photocell and loop detector detect a vehicle, the boom does not lower or it rises again.
How do you open a parking barrier manually?
The housing cover is opened with the key supplied with the barrier, the motor lock is released and the boom is raised by hand. When power returns, the lock must be engaged again.
